Avec Dead Zone, David Cronenberg rompt nouveau avec les rgles du cinma fantastique, ne crant ni monstre ni chaos, mais jouant sur le destin des hommes. Chez lui, la ralit n'est qu'une ventualit, aussi fragile que les autres. Ce film fantastique est certainement l'un des plus faciles d'accs de l'auteur, jouant avec des lments de la vie dont seul Johnny Smith mesure les consquences. Ce professeur, dot d'un pouvoir de clairvoyance la suite de cinq annes de coma, vit par sa perception des choses en marge de la socit, et dfinit ainsi pour Cronenberg un archtype de l'artiste. Christopher Walken, qui interprte avec beaucoup de brio le rle de Johnny Smith, est parvenu incarner le mystre et la vulnrabilit d'un monde ordinaire en alliant charisme et fragilit.
