Raconter toute l'pope des Chevaliers de la Table ronde, depuis la conception d'Arthur jusqu' sa mort, avec pour fil conducteur l'pe Excalibur, tel est l'exceptionnel pari tenu par John Boorman. Avec ce film, le cinaste irlandais renoue avec le thme du voyage et de la qute d'un idal, qu'il avait dj dvelopp dans Dlivrance et Zardoz, tout en retournant la source mme de ses inspirations: la lgende du Graal. Film matrice de l'imaginaire du ralisateur, Excalibur constitue une superbe russite qui parvient recrer un Moyen ge atemporel plus vrai que nature. En confiant les dcors majestueux Antony Pratt, et la lumire magnifiquement contraste Alex Thompson, l'auteur de La Fort d'meraude parvient rendre vraisemblable un monde totalement invent. L'interprtation flamboyante des comdiens contribue galement la russite de ce film la fois baroque et mtaphysique de l'un des cinastes les plus visionnaires de notre poque. --Sylvain Lefort
