Revoir French Connection aujourd'hui, c'est prendre une grande baffe dans la tronche tant saute aux yeux tout ce que ce film novateur sur tous les plans a apport au cinma. Bien sr, depuis, on a fait plus rapide, plus violent ou plus sombre. Mais William Friedkin a impos avec ce film des codes qui font aujourd'hui encore rfrence, et imprim durablement sa marque dans les esprits. D'abord par le ct raliste de ce polar jamais manichen: ici, l'inverse de ce qui se faisait gnralement au cinma et surtout Hollywood, les flics ne sont pas tout bons et les bandits tout mauvais, surtout quand ils ont la classe de Fernando Rey. "Popeye" Doyle est un policier raciste, violent et macho. De plus, lui et son acolyte "Cloudy" ne sont pas infaillibles, loin s'en faut, et essuient pas mal de revers avant de parvenir dmanteler la fameuse French Connection. Inspir d'une histoire vraie les deux vritables inspecteurs jouent d'ailleurs de petits rles dans le film , French Connection fourmille de scnes d'anthologie l'hallucinante course-poursuite voiture-mtro, Gene Hackman et Fernando Rey jouant au chat et la souris et est avant tout un polar diablement efficace, port par son acteur principal. Exceptionnel, Gene Hackman a d'ailleurs remport un Oscar pour ce rle, tout comme Williamn Friedkin (au total, French Connection a obtenu cinq statuettes, dont celle du meilleur film). --Michal Cuq
