Alors, ne manquez pas ce petit bijou d'humour noir, compltement oubli des anthologies traditionnelles, que l'on doit un habile faiseur du cinma amricain, Mike Nichols Ce plaisir qu'on dit charnel, Working Girl, Primary Colors. Dans la foule de son clbrissime Laurat, le ralisateur s'attaque ici un gros morceau: l'arme, ses tracas, ses absurdits. Pour ce faire, il adapte un rcit rput inadaptable de Joseph Heller. Bingo! Mike Nichols restitue parfaitement l'atmosphre absurde qui rgne sur cette base militaire amricaine implante en Italie pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale: propos dpressifs et sans queue ni tte de la hirarchie, sketches sous influence kafkaenne, rglement surraliste, l'image de ce fameux article 22 qui donne son titre au film on n'est pas si loign de l'esprit Monty Python ou d'un improbable croisement Brazil-Johnny s'en va-t-en guerre. Servi par un casting impeccable Alan Arkin, Orson Welles, Jon Voight, Martin Sheen, Anthony Perkins, Art Garfunkel le film bnficie d'une mise en scne particulirement inventive: plans-squences prodigieux, multiplication des longues focales, effets de montage saisissants, etc. Bref, un film audacieux, inventif et subversif, qui a trop longtemps pti de l'ombre de son cousin M.A.S.H.. --Sylvain Lefort
