ou la thorie du chaos transpos dans le Japon mdival du XVIesicle. Librement adapt du Roi Lear de Shakespeare, ce grandiose film costumes permet Akira Kurosawa de reconstituer dans le moindre dtail toute une poque par le biais des costumes, des dcors, des paysages, du langage, des rites et des codes. Une prodigieuse actualisation de la tragdie shakespearienne qui, pour son 28e film, donne l'occasion au cinaste du Chteau de l'araigne et de Dersou Ouzala de dresser un tableau sombre de l'humanit dans un cadre fulgurant de beaut. Les scnes de bataille, aussi cruelles soient-elles, laissent littralement pantois. Des visions d'apocalypse reconstitues la manire d'un Brueghel ou d'un Ucello. De cette tragdie filme du point de vue d'un dieu cruel et absent, il nous reste des squences inoubliables: le chteau proie des flammes, la fuite et l'errance du roi, la chasse au sanglier, entre autres. Le tout dans une nature au diapason: atmosphrique, nuageuse, volcanique. Enfin, dans le rle de ce Lear japonais, Tatsuya Nakadai, que Kurosawa venait de diriger dans Kagemusha, se rvle exceptionnel: au sein de cette fresque flamboyante, son jeu intrieur, approfondi squence aprs squence, lui permet d'habiter son personnage avec une relle intensit et une relle authenticit. Un chef-d'uvre, tout simplement, que l'on doit l'un des plus grands cinastes mondiaux, paul pour l'occasion par le producteur franais Serge Silberman. --Sylvain Lefort
