Audacieux pari que de traiter une nime fois de la guerre et du Vitnam, thmes maintes fois abords par les plus illustres cinastes. Nanmoins, avec Tigerland, Joel Schumacher relve brillamment le dfi et dlivre un film intelligent, original et profondment raliste. Intelligent en ce qu'il dnonce avec pertinence mais sans excs non seulement la stupidit et l'inanit de la guerre et de son concept, mais aussi l'incohrence du gouvernement dans ses rapports avec les soldats. Original parce qu'il ne traite pas du conflit en tant que tel, mais de sa phase prparatoire, en mettant l'accent sur les souffrances psychologiques, plus que physiques, endures par ces trs jeunes recrues, enrles sans autre choix et transformes, soi-disant pour dfendre la noble cause, en machine tuer. Raliste en ce que le ralisateur a pris le parti d'avoir recours des acteurs pour la plupart mconnus (pour viter toute ide reue ou prconue), d'liminer tout artifice (maquillages, doublures) et de tourner son film camra 16 mm l'paule, pour accentuer l'aspect documentaire, plonger le spectateur dans l'intimit du camp et l'imprgner au mieux de la confusion et de la perte de repres des garons, gnrant ainsi une symbiose rarement atteinte au cinma. Emmen par une galerie de personnages clectiques et reprsentatifs de la socit, commencer par le charismatique mais nigmatique Bozz, jouant habilement des rythmes et des ambiances sans jamais relcher la tension gnrale, Tigerland est un tmoignage muscl, intense et humain, qui tire avec outrecuidance les leons d'un pass peu glorieux. --Frdric Thorens
