En parlant de Vienna (Joan Crawford), un personnage de Johnny Guitar dclare n'avoir "jamais vu une femme qui ressemblait autant un homme". Vienna vient d'ouvrir un saloon dans une petite ville et se trouve en butte l'hostilit de la population locale, en particulier de la trs rigoriste Emma (Mercedes McCambridge). Vienna est courtise la fois par le Dancin' Kid (Scott Brady) et par Johnny Guitare (Sterling Hayden), l'ancien dur cuire devenu chanteur itinrant avec qui elle a dj eu une liaison. Lorsque la bande du Kid (o figure Ernest Borgnine) dcide de dvaliser la banque avant de partir en Californie, Emma est prte mettre la corde au cou de tout le monde. Ce film de 1954 de Nicholas Ray est un des westerns les plus tranges de l'histoire du cinma. Les femmes y sont bien plus fortes que les hommes (Johnny est un spectateur dtach - et laconique - de l'attaque de la banque, et il est loin de faire preuve d'hrosme). Certains ont vu dans ce film une allusion la chasse aux sorcires mene par McCarthy. Un demi- sicle plus tard, il reste un film curieux et ambigu. Sterling Hayden est nigmatique, et Joan Crawford fait preuve d'une prsence surprenante. --David Kronke
